Quantcast Icons Of Fright News from 2004

latest news (2005)

12/23/04: First and foremost, on bahalf of the entire Icons Of Fright staff, we'd like to wish you all a happy holidays!!! We launched this site way back in May of 2004 and we're so pleased with what we've been able to do with it thru-out the duration of the year. So, thanks to you for visiting & supporting the site. Check out the Staff page to meet all those involved with the site and send us a hello via e-mail. We'd love to hear from you!
So, rumor has it the next movie maniac to hit the networks will be Pinhead. Variety reports that a 'Hellraiser' TV series is coming. At the moment, neither Clive Barker nor Doug Bradley are involved. (No, Doug Bradley as Pinhead!?). Meanwhile, there is STILL no DVD release dates on the completed 2 Hellraiser sequels 'Deader' & 'Hellworld'.
So, the fantastic 'Shaun Of The Dead' is now available on DVD in the US. Fangoria reports that main stars Simon Pegg (co-writer and star) and Nick Frost (co-star) will make a number of in-store appearances. Listed below are some dates and places. Check out the Fango news clip about it here.

12/10/04: The 'War Of The Worlds' teaser trailer is officially on line. Check out your first look at the big-budget Cruise/Spielberg collaboration here! Doesn't look like Richard Dryfuss and his mashed potatoes will be appearing in this one. Also, not really horror related, but bizarre enough to mention, check out a teaser trailer for the new Tim Burton's 'Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory' update with Johnny Depp here!

12/9/04: The Long Island screening we had mentioned a few days ago is now being talked about on Fangoria's site. Check out the Fango article here. They also reveal that on top of all the short films mentioned below, the event will screen the first trailer for Dante Tomaselli's 'Satan's Playground'. We hope to see you there! A few days ago, the specs for the upcoming 'Exorcist: The Beginning' DVD were announced and much to our surprise, the original Paul Schrader cut is absent from the release. Moviehole is reporting that it's because Paul Schrader's cut of 'Exorcist: The Beginning' will have a limited theatrical release next year. Renny Harlin replaced Schrader after he delivered a more subtle, psychological cut without enough "jump out" scares according to the studio. Izabella Scorupco's character isn't in the Schrader version at all, which means we can look forward to a completely different ending. (Anything is better then the version they put out in theaters!) The much delayed Wes Craven/Kevin Williamson werewolf flick 'Cursed' is rumored to be getting cut down for a PG-13 rating according to a Wes Craven interview in Fango. Let's hope they change their minds! Supposedly Paul W. Anderson (Alien Vs. Predator) will NOT be doing 'Alien 5' as some people have previously reported. Whew! -rg.

12/7/04: To all our Long Island/New York readers... there's an interesting screening of a few horror shorts taking place this weekend, which is already causing a bit of controversy! It's this Saturday night, December 11th, 2004 starting at midnight at the Bellmore Playhouse, located at 222 Petite Ave. (on the corner of Sunrise Highway). Doors open at 11pm.

Screening will be John Torrani's 'Alpha Dead' (pictured left), 'Beaster' (pictured right), 'Big Foot Lives', and Jeff Hayes 'Grandma's Secret Recipe'.

There's rumors of protests from religious groups, which you can read ALL about on this thread. Icons Of Fright will be on hand. Sounds like some good wholesome fun!

12/6/04: Welcome to the December editon of Icons Of Fright!!! We're sorry for the delay in updates!!!

Robg. (webmaster & co-creator of Icons) spent most of November putting the finishing touches on a brand new CD with his band, Pretty Polly. If there are any curious rock fans out there, head on over to the Pretty Polly site at www.prettypollyweb.com. You can watch a 6-minute promotional video and download FREE mp3 tracks on My Space & Pure Volume. Check it out!

Everyone's been reporting of the recently announced 'Evil Dead' remake. Well, we wrote into our pals, the Ladies of the original Evil Dead to get their opinion. And here's what they had to say:

"Well, the boys are finally listening to us and the fans!!! We have tried and tried to convince Sam, Bruce, and Rob for years to try and attempt to make a horror film as good as "Evil Dead", you know, a remake, a repeat, a reprise of..... one of the world's greatest horror films of all time. They're going to try, but you know? How can you improve on perfection?!?!? Actually, all kidding aside, we know the fans are probably thrilled at another "Evil Dead" in the making... but can Cheryl in the cellar be any scarier? Can Linda's laugh be any more frightening? Can Shelly's hand-biting scene be any more nauseating?? We'll all just have to wait and see, won't we............?!!"

Make sure to visit the Ladies of the Evil Dead in the Spring of 2005 at the Monster Mania convention in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. Details @ MonsterMania.net.

Onto this month's interviews and another Icons Of Fright exclusive:

Our buddy & Sleepaway Camper Jeff Hayes has put together 'DEADTIME STORIES' director Jeffrey Delman with Anchor Bay Entertainment and they're now working on a deal to bring this 80's horror classic to DVD for the first time. 'DEADTIME' featured Make-Up FX by Ed French who did the make up work on the original 'Sleepaway Camp'.  To further excite the horror fans for the digital rebirth of 'DEADTIME', Hayes also did an interview with one of the sexy stars of the film: Cathryn De Prume! Check out the Fright exclusive interview with the beautiful Cathryn De Prume here!
Also, this month, Icons spoke to actress, singer, performer Diana Barrows; who played Maddy in the fan favorite 'Friday The 13th Part 7: The New Blood'. She's also worked with director Renny Harlin, read a Fangoria magazine in 'My Mom's A Werewolf' and appeared in an episode of 'Freddy's Nightmares'. Let's not forget that she's a successful singer and stage performer in Europe! You have to read this Fright exclusive interview!

As always, we've got new DVD reviews, this month's Trilogy pics, and last but not least, our special holiday gift to you, the fans: The Icons Of Fright message board!!! So much more to come. Check back mid-month for a huge update to the horror comic book profile, the launch of our articles section, some holiday related features and more! Happy holidays from the Icons Of Fright staff!!!

Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell & Rob Tapert will all serve as producers and consultants on the project. Rumor has it that actor Justin Theroux (Mulholland Dr.) may be up for the roll of Ash. Only time will tell. Also, Fango's website is announcing that their video company Gorezone will be releasing 'SKINNED DEEP'; the writing/directing debut of FX artist Gabe (FRANKENHOOKER) Bartalos. -rg.

11/17/04: Our buddy Dante Tomaselli spoke with Creaure Corner about his next project 'The Ocean', as well as the status of his film, 'Satan's Playground'. Read the Creature Corner interview here. The trailer for the upcoming 'Assault On Precinct 13' is now on line at the IGN website. The remake to one of John Carpenter's early films stars Ethan Hawke, Laurence Fishburne ('Nightmare 3', 'The Matrix' trilogy), Maria Bello ('Secret Window'), John Leguizamo (the upcoming 'Land Of The Dead'), Drea de Matteo, Ja Rule, Gabriel Byrne ('End Of Days'), and Brian Dennehy ('F/X', 'F/X 2'). Speaking of Carpenter remakes, even though the film hasn't even begun production, 'The Fog' is slated for theatrical release on October 21st, 2005. Make-up artist Gary J. Tunnicliffe has shot his own Hellraiser short film titled 'No More Souls', in which Gary plays Pinhead himself! The short might appear on the upcoming DVD release of 'Hellraiser: DEADER'. Read a bit more about it at Gary's official site. -rg.

10/30/04: As a special treat, we're launching our November edition a few days early, just in time for Halloween!

First up, we're got Brad Loree. Brad Loree has been performing stunts in films since the mid 80's, but genre fans should know him as the most recent actor to don the infamous white mask and portray Michael Myers in 'Halloween: Resurrection'. We got to the bottom of how he initially broke into doing stuntwork in films and asked him about his experiences on Halloween: Resurrection. We even threw in a few questions about Mike's fave film, 'Turbulence 3: Heavy Metal'. Brad's really a great guy, so head on over and check out the interview!
Second, we're got another Icons Of Fright first for November's edition. We spoke with Burton C. Bell, the singer of the band FEAR FACTORY. Now, this isn't your average band related interview.  Instead of the usual questions, we spoke candidly with Burton about our mutual love of the horror genre and he told us a bit about Fear Factory's contribution to the 'SAW' soundtrack, what it was like collaborating with comic book artist Ben Templesmith and what inspires the band's songwriting & ideas. It's definitely an interesting read, so go check it out!

As usual, there's new trilogy pics, a slew of new DVD reviews and don't forget to check out our salute to the Halloween franchise at the following link:

Icons Of Fright salutes Halloween.

More to come as always. Cheers! -rg.

Fangoria is reporting a 4 hour mini-series sequel to John Carpenter's classic, 'The Thing'. Read the article about it on their site at this link. Sam Raimi has opted out of letting New Line use the Ash character for the proposed 'Freddy Vs. Jason Vs. Ash', because he'd rather use the character for another Evil Dead film. This month we TOTALLY tracked down actress P.J. Soles. Everyone remembers PJ Soles as Lynda from "Halloween", Riff Randell in "Rock and Roll High School". PJ talked with us about her experiences in those movies and more (ever wanna play footsie with Harrison Ford?).

Read about Ellie's experiences on "Halloween 4: The Return Of Michael Myers and Halloween 5: The Revenge Of Michael Myers", plus she talks about her production company Mindfire Entertainment, "House of the Dead" (and gave us the exclusive scoop that "House of the Dead 2" shoots next month).

So, the big news at the moment is the talk of "Freddy Vs. Jason Vs. Ash". Just about every movie related website is reporting that Sam Raimi along with Bruce Campbell are in negotiations with New Line to make it happen. One way or another, with the heartbreaking success of Alien Vs. Predator, New Line seems to really want a sequel for Freddy Vs. Jason. I'm all for it... and although the idea of throwing Ash in the mix sounded silly at first when the rumors first started flying around the internet last year; now, it seems like welcome change. If anyone is going to take down Freddy AND Jason, it might as well be Bruce Campbell. Let's hope it works out and he gives them both a fistful of boomstick! Bloody-Disgusting.com has posted an interesting script review. Check it out here. Speaking of Jason, the official site for Peter Bracke's upcoming book, Camp Crystal Memories is up and running. Have a peek. Icons Of Fright has joined the world of My Space.com. Check out our profile on there, become friends with us and network with other horror fans! The MONSTER MANIA convention is next weekend in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. Icons Of Fright will be there, so be sure to stop and say hello if you see Robg. or Mike and you'll make it into the next convention review! Check out the convention guests at Monstermania.net. Hope to see you all there! -robg.

We conducted a very (tele)kinetic interview with Lar Park-Lincoln, star of Friday the 13th, part VII: The New Blood and House 2.

We've had a hard time keepin' our noses clean this summer, so looks like Ron Millkie (Officer Dorf in "Friday the 13th") had to pay us visit. Mr. Millkie talks with us about his experiences on "Friday the 13th" and Dante Tomaselli's upcoming "Satan's Playground".
Also, Icons was lucky enough to interview The Ladies of the Evil Dead (Ellen Sandweiss, Betsy Baker, and Sarah York)! Find out what those damned damsels of the Evil Dead have been up to lately! Whatever possessed them to talk with us two, we may never know. -mikec.

Ok, folks. Sorry for the delay, but the June edition of Icons Of Fright is finally here!!! We apologize for the long wait on updating the interviews, but hopefully you'll enjoy what we've got in store for you.

This month, meet Betsy Palmer, the woman all genre fans know as the original killer in "Friday The 13th". That's right, Jason's mom aka Mrs. Voorhees!!! We spoke to Betsy about her history as an actress, and her experiences on various projects including the original Friday The 13th movie. She explained to us her early days in the biz, as well as her own personal backstory to the character of Pamela Voorhees.
Also, we've got actor turned entertainment lawyer Larry Zerner, who played the fan favorite Shelly in "Friday The 13th Part 3". We had a great & fun interview with him in which he spoke to us a bit about his experiences on Friday 3 & on the recent reunion in NJ for the Fangoria Weekend Of Horrors. We've got some other great Friday interviews in the works, so this will all lead to the Icons Of Fright salutes Friday The 13th piece we're hoping to run in the July edition. It will feature an index of all the Friday The 13th related interviews we've conducted, as well as essays on our Camp Crystal Lake memories, a video-DVD box comparison and more. We'll be updating it periodically as we expect a lot of great Friday interviews to come in the future.
Last but not least, we spoke to webmaster Jeff Hayes, who runs the official "Sleepaway Camp" website. He spoke to us about the history of his site, his experiences organizing the reunion for the Fangoria Weekend Of Horrors a few years back, and he also gives us some insight on the upcoming "Return To Sleepaway Camp"; as well as his own full length feature, "Blood Brothers".

We hope you enjoy all the new interviews, as well as our other features and that you'll come visit us again soon. Thanks again for being patient & please feel free to drop us a line anytime. - robg.

4/23/04: Welcome to the first edition of Icons of Fright. We're very thankful to all the friends and horror icons who've helped make this launch possible. I would personally like to extend my highest order of thankfulness to my co-editor, Rob G., for making everything you see here today possible.

So, what's the idea behind this, yet another, horror website? Well, each horror fansite has something unique to offer it's readers. Horrordvds.com focuses on the reviews, Horror.com gets you all the news as it happens. Most of them are run by fans, like yourself, who just want to show how much they love this genre. Rob G. and myself thought long and hard about what we could bring to the mix that perhaps you haven't seen elsewhere. The main thing we wanted to accomplish was presenting you with interviews of your favorite genre icons, of course. We decided we didn't want to limit ourselves to just movie stars, so, as you can see by our first four interviews, we're going to present you with a wide range of personalities who love the genre and have made contributions to it.

This month you'll meet Anthony Timpone, editor of Fangoria. For almost two decades Tony has been the head of a magazine that has been one of the single greatest sources of information on the genre. Fangoria has taken us behind the scenes of our favorite horror movies, helped us get to know our favorite stars like Kane Hodder and Tom Savini as we probably never would have. Would Entertainment Weekly ever dedicate an issue to the great slashers of the 80's? I don't think so. So to return the favor we thought we'd bring you behind the scenes of Fangoria.

Also, you'll be meeting Tony Masi, webmaster of Halloweenmovies.com. A webmaster can be an Icon of Fright? Sure he can! Tony started his own Halloween fansite in the late-90's, a site that was so popular, so well written that he was asked to run the Official Halloween movie site and now works with Moustapha Akkad, and gets to go on the set of all the new Halloween movies.

We've also got Dante Tomaselli, a writer/director you will most certainly be hearing a lot about in the years to come. Dante's surrealistic films such as "Horror" and "Desecration" are at once both beautiful and utterly disturbing. He tells us about his latest film "Satan's Playground" & also about what else he's got lined up.
Last, but certainly not least, we have actor/composer/writer Stu Charno. Many of you will remember him as Ted from "Friday the 13th, part II". Stu also made appearances in "Once Bitten", "Just One of the Guys", "Christine" and an Emmy-award winning episode of "The X-Files". He's also an accomplished composer who has scored several short films, and a writer whose contributed to episodes of "Star Trek: The Next Generation".

Also, be sure to take a look at the Horror Comic Profile, a feature that's pretty unique to this site. We've got profiles on everything from the "Child's Play" comics to new horror comics such as the brilliant "30 Days of Night" and "The Walking Dead".

Thanks for visiting us, and be sure to come back each month to check out our latest interviews and reviews! Feel free to send any comments to either mikec@iconsoffright.com or robg@iconsoffright.com! -mikec.
